The best HireVue alternatives, across every layer that actually competes for it

Updated August 2026

Most 'HireVue alternatives' lists only compare other recorded, one-way video tools, which answers the question for exactly one kind of buyer: someone who likes the recorded format and just wants it cheaper. Most people searching this term are not that buyer. They are solving one of three different problems, cost, camera friction, or the sense that a recording never told them enough, and each one points to a different layer of this market. This page is ordered by that logic rather than by another top-10 list, using only what each vendor's own site publishes, checked directly on 2026-08-05, plus HireVue's own confirmed history where it is directly relevant.

The short answer

There is no single best HireVue alternative, because 'I want to replace HireVue' usually means one of three different complaints, and each one points somewhere else. If the complaint is price and contract size, Spark Hire keeps the same recorded-video format at published SMB rates. If it is the camera itself, or wanting a documented fairness position, Sapia.ai's audited text interview or Paradox's chat-first screening, now inside Workday, solve that without recording video at all. If the complaint is that a recording alone never felt like a real interview, that is the live-AI-interviewer layer: Ribbon, Alex, HeyMilo, Classet and Ployo all compete there, each with a different trade on price transparency, compliance paperwork, channel and volume. And if the role actually needs a testable hard skill rather than another interview of any kind, TestGorilla or Vervoe are the honest answer, not a fourth interviewing tool. One thing worth knowing before any of this: HireVue itself is building toward a live AI interviewer, from the technology behind its March 2026 acquisition of Hireguide, so asking what that product does today is also a legitimate option before assuming you have to switch vendors.

The alternative
HireVue

An enterprise hiring platform combining recorded, on-demand video interviews with AI-scored assessments, scheduled live video interviewing, and separate skills tools; the incumbent most 'AI interview' searches are ultimately compared against.

Format
Both one-way, on-demand recorded interviews (transcribed and scored by AI after the fact) and scheduled, two-way live video interviewing have long been offered on the same platform. The recorded, AI-scored format is what built HireVue's name. In March 2026 HireVue acquired the technology behind Hireguide to build a newer, agentic and voice-driven live 'AI Interviewer' line; a widely repeated 2026-06-18 launch date for that product could not be independently confirmed in this research and is not asserted here.
Based
Sandy/South Jordan, Utah, United States. Global enterprise customer base; 40+ languages supported; FedRAMP authorization for US government use.
Pricing
Not published. Named tiers only (Essential, Enterprise, Premium), routed to a demo request. Third-party buyer guides not affiliated with HireVue estimate enterprise contracts in the roughly $35,000 to $145,000-plus per year range; unverified.

Which alternative fits which complaintNot applicable.Cost and contract size: Spark Hire. Camera friction or a fairness audit: Sapia.ai or Paradox. Wanting a real, checkable conversation: Ribbon, Alex, HeyMilo, Classet or Ployo. A testable hard skill: TestGorilla or Vervoe.

Choose HireVue if

  • You need enterprise-scale ATS plumbing and government-grade compliance. HireVue lists ten named enterprise integrations plus FedRAMP authorization, a decade of procurement work no vendor on this page, including Ployo, has replicated.
  • Your problem really is the recruiter's calendar. A recorded interview lets a hiring team review answers on its own schedule and lets candidates across time zones respond without aligning a calendar. That is a genuine advantage of the recorded layer HireVue built, not a workaround.
  • You need a fixed, easily standardised artifact for legal review. A recorded set of answers, scored identically for every candidate, is simpler to audit line by line than a free-flowing live conversation.
  • You are already running HireVue and it works. None of the alternatives below are a reason to replace a system that is producing hires your managers are happy with.

Choose Ployo if

  • You want the interview to adapt, not follow a fixed script. Ployo's follow-up questions come from what the candidate actually said, which none of HireVue's recorded prompts can do.
  • You want to check the reasoning behind a verdict, not just trust a score. Ployo hands back a per-requirement verdict quoting the candidate's own words, plus the recording and transcript.
  • You hire in the hundreds, not at HireVue's Fortune 100 scale. Ployo has no volume floor and can run on a single role, with setup on a call with the founder rather than a procurement cycle.
  • The candidate is talking to something rather than at it. A recorded interview asks someone to answer a prompt into a camera with no reaction, no chance to ask what the shift pattern actually is, and no signal about whether they did well. That is the part candidates describe as the worst step in the process, and every recorded alternative on this page keeps it. A live conversation lets a strong candidate ask their own questions and leave knowing where they stand.
  • You are switching for a reason the alternatives do not address. Most people arriving at this page are not looking for a cheaper version of the same recorded workflow, they are looking for the workflow to be different. It is worth reading which layer each option below actually sits in before replacing one recorded tool with another.

The alternatives, and who each one suits

Ordered by the kind of buyer they fit, not by preference. Several of these are a better choice than Ployo for a given team, and the note says which.

Spark HireLayer 4 · One-way async video

A one-way video interview platform bundled with an ATS ('Recruit') and a behavioral assessment, explicitly built and priced for small and medium-sized employers.

ClassetLayer 6 · AI live interviewers

An AI voice recruiter, Joy, that calls applicants by phone within seconds of applying, no camera, no video recording at all, built for skilled trades and hourly work. Classet's own materials explicitly contrast this with pre-recorded async video platforms like HireVue.

Best for: Skilled-trades and hourly hiring where candidates apply from a phone and will not sit for any camera-based format, recorded or live.

Pricing: Flex roughly $190/week per job (about 50 AI interviews/month, per-interview overage). ATS Sync from around $1,995/month for unlimited jobs and seats.Full comparison →
TestGorillaLayer 3 · Skills tests

A skills-testing platform with a 350+ test library, AI video interview questions and resume scoring, the most self-serve name in skills testing.

Best for: A role where the actual gap is a discrete, gradable hard skill, not a conversation. Best paired with, not substituted for, an interview.

Pricing: Free: $0/month, 5 tests, 1 seat. Core: $142/month billed annually. Plus: from $400/month billed annually. Enterprise: custom.Full comparison →
VervoeLayer 3 · Skills tests

Job-simulation assessments (coding, video, spreadsheet tasks) auto-graded by AI, Melbourne-founded with SEEK leading its Series A.

Best for: An Australian enterprise buyer who wants job simulations over multiple-choice tests and is comfortable with sales-gated, unpublished pricing.

Pricing: Not published. Every plan routes to a demo request.Full comparison →
PloyoLayer 6 · AI live interviewers

A live, two-way AI video interview: the candidate is on camera and speaks, and the interview adapts to each answer in real time.

Best for: A team that wants the interview itself to be checkable, a per-requirement verdict quoting the candidate's own words plus the recording and transcript, and that hires in the hundreds rather than the thousands, with no volume floor.

Pricing: Not published. Scoped with the founder per hiring team.

Why 'HireVue alternative' usually means three different questions

People searching this term are rarely all solving the same problem. Some think HireVue is too expensive or too enterprise-shaped for their hiring volume. Some have candidates who hate talking to a camera alone, or want a documented fairness position before an AI touches an applicant. Some have simply found that a recorded answer to a fixed prompt never told them enough, and what they actually want is a conversation. Each of those points to a different part of this market, and picking the wrong one means switching vendors without fixing the actual complaint.

A few names that commonly appear alongside HireVue in generic 'alternatives' lists, Willo, VidCruiter, Jobma, Hireflix and myInterview, could not be independently verified in the research behind this page. Rather than guess at their pricing or positioning, they are left off this page entirely. If you are evaluating any of those five, verify directly against their own sites before deciding.

If the complaint is price or contract size: stay in the same layer, pay less

Spark Hire is the closest like-for-like alternative to HireVue's recorded format. It publishes pricing directly on its site: a standalone one-way video interview product at $299 a month, or $249 a month billed annually with unlimited jobs and users, and ATS-bundled tiers starting at $335 a month for up to 200 employees. It is explicitly built for small and medium employers, with its tiers capped by company size before a custom Enterprise conversation, and it transcribes video responses in 50+ languages. No facial-analysis or biometric-scoring claim was found anywhere on its site.

If your actual objection to HireVue is its undisclosed, enterprise-shaped pricing rather than the recorded-video format itself, this is the honest fix: the same structure, published dollar figures, at a fraction of the estimated HireVue contract size.

If the complaint is the camera, or you need a published fairness story: text or chat, not another video tool

Sapia.ai and Paradox both remove the camera problem entirely rather than trying to make the camera more comfortable. Sapia.ai runs a text-only chat interview, no camera or video anywhere in the product, and has commissioned an independent disparate-impact report from BLDS, LLC, published in December 2022, the only vendor across this whole cluster with that specific evidence. Paradox's assistant Olivia engages candidates over chat and SMS, screens against knockout questions and books interviews automatically, and since Workday completed its acquisition on 1 October 2025 it is a first-party option for any Workday customer.

Neither replaces a spoken conversation. But if the reason candidates are dropping out of your process is the camera itself, that is the actual fix, not a friendlier recording tool.

If a recording never felt like an interview: the live AI interviewer layer

This is where HireVue itself is now headed, and where five vendors researched here already compete: Ribbon, Alex, HeyMilo, Classet and Ployo. Each makes a genuinely different trade. Ribbon publishes self-serve pricing from $499 a month plus a SOC 2 report and a New York City Local Law 144 bias audit. Alex, the rebrand of Apriora, has raised roughly $20M and lists 14 named ATS integrations plus a dedicated identity-verification module. HeyMilo has SOC 2 Type I certification and the strongest named, numeric case studies in this set, built specifically for staffing agencies running Bullhorn, Avionté or JobDiva. Classet is voice-only over a real phone call, no video recorded at all, and its own materials explicitly contrast that format with pre-recorded async video platforms like HireVue. Ployo is the only one of the five with no volume floor and a per-requirement, quote-linked verdict rather than a scored output.

Within a year, 'does it have a live AI interviewer' will not differentiate any name in this category, including HireVue's own new line. What will keep mattering is what each vendor hands back when the AI is wrong: a score you are asked to trust, or a transcript you can actually check.

If the role needs a testable skill, not another interview

Sometimes the honest answer to 'what replaces HireVue' is not another interview at all. TestGorilla and Vervoe both grade a discrete task rather than assessing a conversation, and where a skill is genuinely testable, coding, a specific tool, a spreadsheet exercise, a skills test settles it better than any interview, ours included. TestGorilla is the most self-serve name in the category, with a genuine free tier and published pricing from $142 a month. Vervoe is Melbourne-founded, with SEEK leading its Series A, and runs job simulations rather than multiple-choice tests, though it does not publish pricing.

One caveat worth carrying into this decision: most skills-testing platforms have built little to no content for frontline or non-desk roles. If you are hiring for care, support work, retail or trades, check that coverage before assuming a skills test is the right purchase.

What is actually changing at HireVue itself

Before assuming you have to leave HireVue entirely, it is worth knowing what changed there in 2026. In March, HireVue acquired the technology behind Hireguide specifically to build a live, agentic AI interviewer, confirmed directly by its own press release. A specific 2026-06-18 launch date for that product circulates widely but could not be independently confirmed against HireVue's own site in this research, so it is not asserted here.

If the thing driving your search is specifically 'I want a live conversation, not a recording', and you are otherwise satisfied with HireVue's enterprise footprint and ATS integrations, it is worth requesting a demo of that new line directly before switching vendors. The incumbent may already be building the fix.

Where Ployo fits among these, honestly

Ployo is one of five live-AI-interviewer options on this page, not automatically the right one. It does not publish pricing, holds no SOC 2 certification or independent bias audit, and has a far younger, smaller install base than HireVue, Alex or HeyMilo. What it offers instead is no volume floor, a per-requirement verdict quoting the candidate's own words alongside the full recording and transcript, and setup on a call with the founder rather than a procurement cycle.

If your compliance checklist needs a report today, Ribbon or HeyMilo already have one. If it is staffing-agency ATS depth, HeyMilo. If your candidates apply from a phone and will not sit for any camera at all, Classet. If what you want is a live, adaptive conversation you can check afterward, and you do not need enterprise procurement machinery to get there, that is Ployo's case to make, and it is worth weighing against the other four rather than taken on faith.

The actual difference

None of the recorded-video alternatives on this page fix the actual thing that makes people search for a HireVue alternative in the first place: nobody on the other end of the conversation. If your reason for leaving is cost or camera friction, a chat AI is the right move. If your reason is wanting a real conversation that adapts and can be checked afterward, that is the layer Ployo, Ribbon, Alex, HeyMilo and Classet all compete in, live AI interviewers, not another version of the recorded tool you are already unhappy with.

Where this sits

HireVue is a layer 4 tool: one-way async video. The candidate records answers to fixed prompts, alone, with no one on the other end. A recruiter watches later. See how the six layers of first-round screening fit together →

Frequently asked

What is the best alternative to HireVue?

There isn't a single one, because people leaving HireVue are usually solving one of three different problems: cost, camera friction, or wanting a real conversation instead of a recording. Spark Hire answers the cost problem inside the same recorded-video format. Sapia.ai and Paradox answer the camera problem by removing video entirely. Ribbon, Alex, HeyMilo, Classet and Ployo answer the 'a recording isn't enough' problem with a live, adaptive AI interview. Pick based on which problem is actually yours.

Is there a cheaper one-way video alternative to HireVue?

Spark Hire is the closest like-for-like. It publishes pricing directly: a standalone one-way video interview product at $299/month, or $249/month billed annually, or ATS-bundled tiers from $335/month, explicitly scoped for small and medium employers, capped at 200 to 500 employees before a custom Enterprise conversation. HireVue does not publish pricing at all; third-party buyer guides, not HireVue, estimate contracts in the $35,000 to $145,000-plus per year range.

Is HireVue building a live AI interviewer like Ribbon or Ployo?

Yes, in progress. In March 2026 HireVue acquired the technology behind Hireguide specifically to accelerate an agentic, voice-based AI interviewer. A specific launch date of 2026-06-18 circulates widely for this product but could not be independently confirmed against HireVue's own site in this research, so verify directly with HireVue before assuming what has shipped. Ployo, Ribbon, Alex, HeyMilo and Classet have all been running live AI interviews in production.

Which HireVue alternatives have independent compliance or bias-audit evidence?

Sapia.ai commissioned an independent disparate-impact report from BLDS, LLC, published in December 2022. Ribbon and HeyMilo both state SOC 2 Type I certification; Ribbon also states a New York City Local Law 144 bias audit. HireVue's own history includes a 2019 EPIC complaint to the FTC over its AI-scored interviews and the resulting discontinuation of facial-expression analysis in 2021. Ployo, Alex, Classet, TestGorilla and Vervoe carry no equivalent third-party audit found in this research and none of them claim one.

Do I actually need to change categories, or just find a cheaper HireVue?

That depends on what is actually broken. If your only complaint is HireVue's undisclosed enterprise pricing and you are otherwise fine with a recorded, one-way interview, Spark Hire solves that without changing format. If your complaint is that the interview itself does not tell you enough, no cheaper recorded-video tool fixes that, and the honest move is to change layers entirely, toward a chat AI, a live AI interviewer, or a skills test, depending on the role.

If you are past comparing

Most of what decides this is your own role, not the feature grid. Worked examples of AI screening applied to specific sectors are on the solutions pages, and the practical how-to side, including what compliance actually requires before someone starts a shift, is in the hiring guides.

If you would rather see the mechanics than read about them, the AI video interviewer page walks through an interview end to end.
