TestGorilla vs Vervoe: which skills-testing platform fits?

Updated August 2026

TestGorilla and Vervoe get compared constantly by teams evaluating skills-testing platforms, and the comparison is genuinely close in places: both grade candidates on tasks rather than resumes, both integrate with the major ATS platforms, and both sell to the same buyer at different points in their evaluation. The real difference is less about features than about who each one is built to sell to, and how much either is willing to tell you before a sales call. We build Ployo, a live AI video interview in a neighbouring layer, and are not a party to this comparison, so what follows is our honest read rather than a pitch.

The short answer

Choose TestGorilla if you want to see real numbers before you talk to anyone, need a broad, ready-made test library across technical and office roles, or want a genuine free tier to trial the product with no sales call. Choose Vervoe if you are an Australian or enterprise buyer who wants job-simulation grading over multiple-choice tests, values Vervoe's explicit anti-cheat and generative-AI-detection claims, and is comfortable with sales-gated pricing. Neither has meaningfully built for frontline or non-desk hiring: TestGorilla's non-desk content is an estimated 5 to 10 percent of its library, and Vervoe's assessment library turned up only two clearly non-desk role tests. If that is your hiring population, this page will not solve it either way.

What each one is actually selling

TestGorilla's pitch is breadth and access: 350+ pre-built tests spanning technical and non-technical roles, a real free tier, and a self-serve Core plan a hiring manager can start on a card without a sales call. Its published customer list, PayPal, Equifax, PepsiCo, Instacart, Revolut, reads like a company that sells to whoever finds it, not just whoever it courts.

Vervoe's pitch is depth over a narrower band: job simulations rather than multiple-choice tests, graded and ranked by AI, sold entirely through a demo and a sales conversation. Its customer list, Tennis Australia, Dentsu, Australia Post, Lumen Technologies, iSelect, BOQ Group, skews toward large Australian and enterprise brands rather than a self-serve long tail.

That difference in go-to-market is not incidental. It shapes almost everything else in this comparison, from pricing transparency to who each product is realistically for.

Pricing transparency is the sharpest difference

TestGorilla publishes exact figures on its own pricing page: a genuine $0 free plan, a $142 per month Core tier (though only as an annual commitment, $1,704 per year, with no monthly option), and a Plus tier starting from $400 per month. A team can work out roughly what this will cost before a single call.

Vervoe's live pricing page shows a single Enterprise plan with a features list and repeated 'Book a Demo' calls to action, and no dollar figure anywhere. Older third-party pages reference a $79 per month tier from an earlier version of the product, but that could not be confirmed on the current live site and may simply be gone.

For a buyer trying to shortlist quickly, that gap matters on its own. TestGorilla lets you rule itself in or out in five minutes. Vervoe requires a conversation before you know if it is even in your budget.

Frontline coverage: both are weak, in different ways

Neither platform is a strong choice if most of your hiring is non-desk. TestGorilla's own test-library page lists roles like retail sales, front desk receptionist, restaurant management and health care aide, but by direct count these sit alongside 83 programming tests in a library that is overwhelmingly technical and office-skewed, an estimated 5 to 10 percent frontline share.

Vervoe's assessment library turned up just two role tests that are clearly non-desk, teacher and personal care assistant, against a catalogue dominated by software development, accounting and finance, product management and marketing roles.

If your hiring is genuinely frontline, aged care, retail floor, warehouse, hospitality, neither of these two is the strongest fit in the broader skills-testing layer. Mercer Mettl's dedicated blue-collar line and Xobin's named warehouse tests go considerably further, and are worth a look before assuming this comparison is the whole market.

The anti-cheat claims are not symmetric

Vervoe states its anti-cheat position directly on its own pricing page: 'Anti Cheating' as a homepage feature category, and 'Advanced Generative AI Detection' listed explicitly on its Enterprise tier. It also cites an independent bias audit of its scoring by Holistic AI, though the audit's actual findings were not independently verified in this research pass and should be treated as a vendor claim until confirmed.

On the pages fetched for this comparison, TestGorilla made no equivalent anti-cheat or proctoring claim. That is not proof the feature does not exist somewhere in the product; it is what the primary pages available for this research surfaced, and a buyer for whom AI-assisted cheating is a live concern should ask both vendors directly rather than assume either answer from this alone.

A third option, stated plainly

For transparency: we build Ployo, and it sits in the neighbouring layer rather than competing directly with either of these two. Instead of a test or a simulation it runs a live AI video interview. The candidate is on camera and speaks, follow-up questions come from what they actually said, and you get a verdict on each of your requirements with their own words quoted as the evidence, plus the recording and the transcript.

That matters here for a specific reason. Both tools above are strongest on desk and technical roles, and thinnest on frontline work, which is most of what gets hired at volume. If the roles you are filling are care workers, support workers, drivers, retail or contact centre staff, the thing you need to establish is not gradable by a test at all: whether someone has genuinely done the work they listed, and how they speak to a person having a bad day. That is a conversation, and it is the round most teams cut first when the applicant pile grows.

Where it is not the answer: if the job needs a genuinely testable hard skill, a test settles it better than any interview, ours included. That is what both TestGorilla and Vervoe do well, in their own different ways, and plenty of teams should run one of them alongside an interview rather than instead of it.

Where this sits

TestGorilla is a layer 3 tool: skills tests. The candidate completes a test or work sample that demonstrates a specific skill. See how the six layers of first-round screening fit together →

Frequently asked

Is TestGorilla or Vervoe cheaper?

TestGorilla publishes its pricing: a free plan, then $142/month on the Core tier (annual billing only), then Plus from $400/month. Vervoe publishes no pricing at all on its current live pricing page; every plan is quoted through a demo request, so a direct cost comparison is not possible without contacting sales.

Is Vervoe more Australian than TestGorilla?

Yes. Vervoe was founded in Melbourne in 2016 and its Series A was led by SEEK, the Australian employment marketplace. TestGorilla was founded in Amsterdam in 2019 and, while it serves customers globally including in Australia, it is not an Australian company.

Does either platform publish completion or drop-off rates?

No. Neither TestGorilla's nor Vervoe's fetched pages publish a specific completion or abandonment rate for their assessments. Treat any such figure attributed to either platform as unsourced unless the vendor publishes the actual number.

Which one covers frontline or non-desk hiring better?

Neither strongly. TestGorilla's own test library shows an estimated 5 to 10 percent non-desk content against a library dominated by programming and office-role tests. Vervoe's assessment library surfaced only two clearly non-desk role tests. Buyers hiring mainly for frontline roles should look at Mercer Mettl's dedicated blue-collar line or Xobin's named warehouse tests instead.

Can I use TestGorilla and Vervoe together?

It is possible but usually redundant, since both are graded task or test platforms competing for the same stage of the funnel. Most teams pick one based on buying motion, self-serve and published pricing versus enterprise sales and job simulations, rather than running both on the same candidates.

If you are past comparing

Most of what decides this is your own role, not the feature grid. Worked examples of AI screening applied to specific sectors are on the solutions pages, and the practical how-to side, including what compliance actually requires before someone starts a shift, is in the hiring guides.

If you would rather see the mechanics than read about them, the AI video interviewer page walks through an interview end to end.
