The best Sapia.ai alternatives, and the Australian options to HireVue
Updated September 2026
Sapia.ai is a Melbourne company that runs chat-based AI interviews, prices per hire, and says it is designed for companies hiring more than 500 people a year. People look for an alternative for three reasons: they want to see and hear the candidate rather than read typed answers, they hire below Sapia's volume, or they want a price on a page. The same search often carries a second question, which Australian alternatives to HireVue exist, so this guide answers both. Ployo is our recommendation for most teams. Ployo is recruitment software with a built-in applicant tracking system and an AI video interviewer that interviews every applicant the day they apply.
For most teams, the best Sapia.ai alternative is Ployo. Where Sapia's interview is a typed chat, Sarah, Ployo's AI interviewer, runs a live two-way video interview, so you see and hear the candidate, and your team gets a Met or Not Met verdict on each must-have with the candidate's own words quoted, plus the recording and transcript. Ployo publishes US dollar pricing from $249 a month with no volume floor, so it fits employers well below 500 hires a year. Keep Sapia if you need a published independent disparate-impact report and hire at that scale. For Australian alternatives to HireVue, Sapia.ai and Vervoe are both Melbourne-based, Willo publishes pricing in Australian dollars, and Ployo runs in production on Australian care and healthcare hiring while serving employers globally.

Choose Sapia.ai if
- Your compliance team wants third-party fairness evidence. Sapia published an independent disparate-impact report by BLDS, LLC in December 2022 that found no evidence of practically significant disparate impact for sex or race and ethnicity in the data examined. Ployo has not commissioned one.
- You hire thousands a year and want to pay only for hires. Sapia's per-hire model includes unlimited interviews, which suits very high applicant-to-hire ratios.
- Your applicants will not go on camera. A chat interview needs no camera, no quiet room and no bandwidth for video.
- You want an Australian vendor with Australian aged care references. Sapia is Melbourne-based and publishes customer stories with Regis Aged Care and Anglicare. Ployo prices in US dollars, so an exchange rate sits between list price and invoice.
Choose Ployo if
- You want to see and hear the candidate. Sarah, Ployo's AI interviewer, runs a live two-way video interview, so you hear how someone explains a hard shift or a difficult conversation with a family, which matters in care roles where communication is the job.
- You want every follow-up earned by the answer. Ployo generates follow-up questions from what the candidate actually said, in 23 languages, at any hour, on any device.
- You want a verdict a manager can check in minutes. Met or Not Met is decided on the must-haves only, with the verbatim quote behind each requirement, red flags on good-to-have gaps, and the recording and transcript kept.
- You hire below 500 a year. Ployo has no volume floor: Essential covers 60 interviews a month for $249, and a twelve person provider buys the same product a multi-site group does.
- You want the applicant tracking system included. Job links, bulk CV upload, a Gmail inbox pull including LinkedIn Easy Apply emails, CV matching against must-haves, stages from Pending to Hired and a drag-and-drop review board come with every plan.
- You want a price before a sales cycle and a person on every decision. Ployo publishes its plans, and its automation only advances candidates; Ployo never auto-rejects anyone.

The alternatives, and who each one suits
Ordered by the kind of buyer they fit, not by preference. Several of these are a better choice than Ployo for a given team, and the note says which.
Recruitment software with a built-in applicant tracking system and an AI video interviewer, Sarah, who interviews every applicant live on video the day they apply.
Best for: Teams that want to see and hear every applicant, hire below Sapia's 500-a-year framing, and want a published price and a built-in tracker. Not the pick if your compliance team requires a third-party bias audit today.
Skills assessments and job simulations with AI grading and a conversational AI screening agent, founded in 2016 with a registered office in Melbourne.
Best for: An Australian employer that wants candidates to show a skill through a work task, not just talk about it.
On-demand and live video interviews, assessments and a voice AI Interviewer.
Best for: A large employer that wants recorded video, assessments and a voice AI interviewer from one enterprise vendor.
Asynchronous video interviews, with pricing published in Australian dollars among four currencies.
Best for: An Australian team hiring for a handful of roles that wants pay-as-you-go recorded video priced in AUD.
One-way video interviews and an ATS with published prices for small and mid-size employers.
Best for: A small or mid-size employer that wants recorded video interviews at a published US dollar price.
A chat and SMS assistant that screens, answers questions and schedules interviews, owned by Workday.
Best for: A large employer that liked Sapia's text-first experience but whose real bottleneck is reaching and booking applicants.
Why teams look for a Sapia.ai alternative
Sapia.ai is a serious product with a real fairness story, and several of the reasons to leave it are about fit rather than quality. The first is format: a chat interview captures what someone types, and for roles where speaking to people is the work, many teams want to hear the answer. The second is volume: Sapia's pricing page says it is designed for companies hiring more than 500 people a year, which leaves mid-size employers outside its shape. The third is price visibility: Sapia prices per hire and does not publish figures.
Ployo addresses all three, and the rest of this list covers buyers Ployo does not suit.
The same answer, two formats
A first round is worth what it can find out. Both of these are real screening formats and both work; they differ in what happens after the candidate stops talking.
Typed answer
“One of our residents kept trying to leave at night. I sat with her, worked out she was looking for her husband, and changed her evening routine.”
Submitted, scored, and the interview moves to the next question. Written in private, at the candidate’s own pace, with every tab on their machine available to them.
Spoken answer
“One of our residents kept trying to leave at night. I sat with her, worked out she was looking for her husband, and changed her evening routine.”
And then, unscripted
“You changed the routine. Who signed that off, and what did you write in the notes?”
That second question did not exist until she gave the first answer. It is the one that separates a story a candidate can tell from a shift they actually ran.
Our pick: Ployo
Ployo is recruitment software with a built-in applicant tracking system and an AI video interviewer that interviews every applicant the day they apply. Applicants come in through a job link, a bulk CV upload or a Gmail inbox pull, and each CV is checked against the role's must-haves and good-to-haves. Sarah, Ployo's AI interviewer, invites every applicant straight away, and they book a slot or start now on any device. The interview is live and two-way, on video, with follow-ups on what they said, in 23 languages.
Your team gets a Met or Not Met verdict decided on the must-haves only, with the verbatim quote behind each requirement, plus the recording and transcript, and moves candidates through stages to Hired. Every applicant for a role gets the same must-have questions, consent is taken before recording, and an activity log shows who did what; more on that at ployo.ai/trust.
Plans are $249, $850 and $2,135 a month in US dollars, with 60, 250 and 800 interviews included and no per-seat charge. Australian buyers should note the prices are in US dollars. Buying starts with a call to the founder, and ployo.ai/sample shows a real interview without signing up.
Australian alternatives to HireVue
Two of the best-known Australian companies in this space are both in Melbourne. Sapia.ai runs chat-based AI interviews and lists Qantas, Kmart Group and David Jones among its customers alongside Regis Aged Care and Anglicare. Vervoe was founded in 2016 by Omer Molad and David Weinberg, has a registered office in Melbourne, and runs skills assessments, job simulations with AI grading and a conversational AI screening agent; it names Australia Post, BOQ Group and Tennis Australia as customers and does not publish pricing.
If what you need is local pricing rather than a local head office, Willo publishes its asynchronous video plans in Australian dollars, from A$95 per live role a month. Paradox lists an office in Sydney and UnitingCare among its healthcare customers. And Ployo runs in production on Australian care and healthcare hiring, with a live video interview rather than a recording.
If you want to stay with recorded video: HireVue, Spark Hire and Willo
HireVue offers on-demand video interviews, where candidates record answers on their own schedule, alongside live video, assessments and a voice AI Interviewer built from its March 2026 Hireguide acquisition. It does not publish pricing. Spark Hire publishes its video interview plans from $299 a month, or $249 a month billed annually with unlimited jobs and users. Willo sells Willo Lite at $59 per live role a month and Willo Enterprise from $3,799 a year, with prices also shown in pounds, euros and Australian dollars.

If you want chat and scheduling rather than an interview: Paradox
If the part of Sapia you valued was the no-camera, text-first experience, and your real problem is reaching and booking applicants, Paradox's assistant Olivia engages over SMS and chat, screens for minimum qualifications and schedules interviews. Workday has owned Paradox since 1 October 2025, and it does not publish pricing.
Sapia reads what a candidate types. Ployo interviews them on video and hands you the recording and the quote behind every verdict. For a frontline or care role where communication is the work, that difference decides the hire.
Sapia.ai is a layer 5 tool: conversational ai screening (chat). An AI screens the candidate by text chat, often over SMS or a web widget. See how the six layers of first-round screening fit together →

Most of what decides this is your own role, not the feature grid. Worked examples of AI screening applied to specific sectors are on the solutions pages, and the practical how-to side, including what compliance actually requires before someone starts a shift, is in the hiring guides.
If you would rather see the mechanics than read about them, the AI video interviewer page walks through an interview end to end.
